I won’t bore everyone with posting my list of faves but I rated Rihanna’s ubiquitous recent hit highly. I just came across yesterday, however, this (downloadable and streamable) NPR-Planet Money story from last July about how stuff like Rihanna’s recent album gets made and promoted. The song the story focuses on doesn’t become much of a hit, which gives the story (and the hundreds of comments it received at the time) a particular flavor. R’s recent extreme success alters that flavor again. Worth a listen if, like me, you missed it. (It would be interesting to hear/read a broader piece/series that explored how industrial pop sausage gets made on lower budgets than Rihanna’s – but the high end is so dramatic!)

I’ve made a bit of a big deal out of it this year and have been listening to every release I can find for the past twelve months (not just for the FT readers’ poll of course), leading to a rather excessive top 200 I’m putting up here – http://haonowshaokao.com/tag/2011-tracks/ – daily.
To be honest it wasn’t really worth the effort as I have no desire to become a music journalist, am now thoroughly sick of listening to new releases, and have probably had it with indie bands forever. But might as well pimp it out since I am never ever doing it again.

And here’s Beyonce’s favourite 9 tracks of the year, much more easily digestible – http://www.beyonceonline.com/us/news/beyonc%25C3%25A9s-favorite-songs-2011

I fear Lady Gaga is going to suffer the most from SPLITTING – she currently has 6 different tracks on the go…

Last year, I remember my email ended up in your junk folder. Might be an idea to check there again this year :-) (originallegend1966@hotmail.com)
