The furious Who Whype spinning around us throws up a gem from the Radio Times. RT asked their readers to vote for their Coolest People on Telly and guess who came top:

  1. Doctor Who (David Tennant)
  2. Jack Bauer in 24 (Kiefer Sutherland)
  3. The Fonz in Happy Days (Henry Winkler)
  4. Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth)
  5. Cat in Red Dwarf (Danny John-Jules)
  6. DCI Gene Hunt in Life On Mars (Philip Glenister)
  7. Dermot O’Leary
  8. Columbo (Peter Falk)
  9. Dylan in The Magic Roundabout
  10. Sawyer in Lost (Josh Holloway)

So here are two more lists from the writers of Freakytrigger*:

Top 5 things we know about the chuckleheads voting in Radio Times polls

  1. They are all sexualists on a par with the writers of the Observer Women Monthly Magazine
  2. They believe that Cat in Red Dwarf is cool. Cat is not even the coolest character in Red Dwarf. Red Dwarf ffs.
  3. They believe barking ‘It’s our only chance’ into a cell phone while torturing your relatives and breaking into embassies is cool**
  4. They have never watched an episode of Happy Days
  5. They are about one place above the numbskulls voting in Teletext polls.

Redressing the key point of sexualism…

FreakyTrigger’s Top 10 Cool Ladies of Telly

  1. Kara ‘Frakkin’ Trace – Battlestar Galactica’s Starbuck NO EXPLANATION NEEDED
  2. Tracy from Eastenders – so cool she hardly says a word
  3. Tracy Barlow – murderer and cool with that
  4. Chloe from 24 – WAAAAAAAY cooler than Jack. Plus did you see her with that automatic rifle!? ROWR!
  5. Kim Possible – so cool she does not care that cargo pants are like so 90s
  6. Alex Rousseau from Lost – cool with that whole twigs-in-the-hair vibe
  7. Phyllis from Life On Mars – Political Correctness, before it went mad, was cool
  8. Unbreakable Cheerleader Girl from Heroes – ok we’re not really following the show that much
  9. Sarah Beeny – fertility and big knockers are always cool

    OMG related articles.

I am confused by our list. Is it meant to be rubbish in the way the RT one is, or good?

There is REALLY NO POINT in arguing over who the coolest character in Red Dwarf is.

Oh poor fool Alan who does not realise THE 90s are back and cargo pants with them (has he even BEEN in New Look lately)???

I have never seen this battlestar galactica but this Sarah Beeny thing is fraeky.

There’s definitely a thin line of sarcasm being trod wrt the charge of sexualism.

i stick by my claim that the CAT IN RED DWARF faction represent a MASSIVE SPOILER VOTE by ppl who consider the very idea of “cool” to be hateful and absurd

The RT list’s fiction-centricity raises an interesting qn i.e. if cool involves a certain economy of effort, can fictional characters be cool when the entire narrative universe in which they exist is secretly loaded in favour of letting them do ‘cool things’? This is what always annoys me with ‘cool’ characters in comics – the construction of moments of setpiece coolness.

(I look to Pink S to put this in Buffy/Xander/Bez terms)

haha it was not possible to get through to actual real “am i cool or not” archives anyway, as they are on the long-ago stolen original url :(

The RT list seems to conflate cool into very different subgroups:

Cool as in written to be cool in their universe:
Hence the Fonz*, Cat and Dylan (maybe Sawyer).

Cool as in a synonym for a great admirable character:
    DW, JB, GH

    Cool as in unflappable:
Columbo, (Sawyer), Doctor Who a bit, Dermot a bit

Cool as in ladies want to have the secks with them:
    Sawyer, Mr Darcy, Dermot O’Leary

*How cool really is a man who calls the mens lavvies his office?

Sarah Beeny shouldn’t be on the list because she is AN REAL PERSON IN REAL LIFE.

The fictional Dermot O’Leary would argue otherwise
