Of course it was special before that, but it wasn’t until 96/97 that I was living the lyrics. A working class young man in his early 20s with two degrees, first to go to university and completely uprooted from his background, with an overseas girlfriend (German not Greek!) from a higher social class who really would “never understand how it feels”.

It’s an awesome record that allows approach from many angles. For example I’ve always hated the noble savage trope as well, but I derive self-esteem from knowing that my background gave me no advantages. If anything I felt the song’s power even more keenly after (reluctantly) becoming an accountant. Here I was surrounded by people who took far more for granted than my ex-girlfriend ever did, some of who had a sense of entitlement I’d been lucky to avoid at university.

I also love reading people’s more sceptical, cynical takes on the song. That’s part of what great art is for.
