Welcome to Wordpress oh lovely FT writers

Getting Started

  1. Don’t worry, you won’t break anything. All mistakes can be edited afterwards. Not just by you, but the site editors have the rights to edit your posts too. Of course major changes will be checked with you first!
  2. Remember to put your post into a category. See the “Categories” box to the right of where you write a post? Click the “+” to expand it, and DRAG IT TO THE TOP. Woo! All those boxes on the right can be rearranged as you see fit.
  3. Posts can be in any number of categories, but for now we are still using the old blog-titles as categories - so most of the time you’ll just need to tick one of those. We will be adding generic categories at a later date as we move away from using most of the old blog names.
  4. Other useful boxes on the “Write Page” screen:
    • “Post Status” - but don’t use the “sticky” option as that’s for admin posts only
    • “Discussion” - you can disallow comments on your post if you like. In general don’t - you can always change it later if things go awry

Post-writing tricks

  1. Images - In your HTML code in an <img src= tag add class=left (instead of align) to make it neatly inset the text with a little border around it
  2. Image browser – Here’s how to use the upload/browse gadget you see under the “Write Post” area.
  3. “Read more…” If you are writing a long entry, put in <!--more--> at the point that it should cut off for the short version on the front page. If you are using the “wysiwyg” post editor there is a “more—” button on the toolbar
  4. Related articles This works from the words in the title of the post. If you write a more cryptic title, you should use the “Custom Fields” bit (under the image uploader) and add a “keyword” custom field which should contain a string of words used instead

    Your Wordpress queries here!

When/if the comments here get long and conversational, I will edit them down - perhaps out when the answer is incorporated in the page.

Can we add to the ‘post-writing tricks’ the thing that Pete does to make the big images on the front page smaller. I want to do it to the Fantastic Four cover I just posted but can’t remember how…

also (minor): in his most recent oldchartblogging robin links to an old metapost of tom’s abt popular and points out — i think correctly — that it is wrongly dated

Old metapost now altered. Ugly FF Viking cover still blighting the frontpage!

More zoom only works if you host the picture on FT.
