Alan Moore's latest endeavour is to produce Dodgem Logic - an underground magazine from his (and my) home town of Northampton.

Yes, I missed lots out, it's true, but I certainly should have mentioned Halo Jones, which I love. You can often find the collection of the whole run reasonably cheaply, too.

I'm less keen on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - it looks good, and it's entertaining enough, but it is more smart pastiche, and its sources are things for which I have little love.

I try to be balanced! Alan was a good friend for years (we drifted apart rather than fell out) and I have enormous personal fondness for him, and huge admiration for his work, but some of it does appeal to me much more than others.

No mention of his 2000AD stuff, Martin? Perhaps because I never read Warrior, that's what I think of when I think of his pre-Swamp Thing work? Halo Jones wears its Love & Rockets (and other) influences a little too heavily but the first book is one of the best inventions of a future world I've seen in comics. And his short stories for 2000AD are terrific: the best sci-fi shorts in comics outside EC, maybe.

it's refreshing to read an appreciation of alan moore that isn't just hagiography - there's been a tension between his roots in the 'underground' comix scene and his work with the mainstream comics companies that have led to his eventual acrimonious break from DC and his decision to work with independent publishers.

As someone who bought Promethea issue by issue I have to say I found the story utterly compelling and would also want to say a positive word for 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'.

I would like to see him do something new however rather than reimagine existing characters but I suspect that's unlikely.

There is a great interview with him at
