Secrets of the Doomsday Clock!: i.e. who at the Atomic Energy Bulletin gets to move it forward and back. Sadly it seems that an editor cannot move the clock to ONE TO MIDNIGHT just because they thought it would be a funny idea in the pub. The clock – symbol of atom doom fear since 1947 – has never been earlier than seventeen to midnight, perhaps for the good design reason that if it gets too early the minute hand drops off the bottom of the logo. I always wondered whether, if World War III actually happened, some researcher would use his final four minutes to move the clock righteously to midnight…
