One of my not-yet-abandoned projects is writing up some anime series that I sampled the first episodes of, the top of which heap is Akagi, an amazing mah jonng amongst the gangsters series. It (or at least the initial episode) threads an amazing path visa vis giving you enough rule context to understand the dizzying psychological game being played behind (and sometimes against) the rules.

the tiles in solitaire are identical to standard MJ tiles (i think there’s a malay variant which has more tiles and tile-types); otherwise the game is really very different

in mah jong proper (chinese or western) you’re turning your hand of 13 + 1 pick-up into a set of 4 threes and a pair (plus fiddly variants, special hands etc), and playing three other people who are doing to same
