olympic fashion watch - prequel

during the 2006 winter olympics in turin, i developed an overweening and somewhat embarrassing crush on tempestuous skateuse IRINA SLUTSKAYA—she of the apple cheeks, mousy haircut, and certain pleasing thickness that one does not normally associate with ice skaters.

Slutskaya

something else one doesn’t associate with ice skaters is clothes you might actually want to wear yourself, but in 2006 russia had it goin on. their design motif - a sort of cross between a paisley shape and a garland - applied to straight-up indie gas-station attendant vibe i found almost as irresistable as a certain ice skater who wore it. the russians even had a twee mascot, cheburashka, that has perhaps contributed to a new olympic trend.

there’s no need to mention the hours i spent trying to find one of the above hoodies for sale. oh i was a desperate fool by the end of it. 1/2-inch appliqué pins on ebay with the above garland/paisley symbol started whetting my appetite. in the end i forgot about it. but now the olympics are back, taunting me again with inaccessible fashion, reminding me of the ones that got away. back in 2006 i did manage to track down the company that made the russian outfits. are you out there, boscosport? do you do trackbacks? i’m an easy mark.
