I Love Indie Kids

OK you lot listen up. Some people were apparently mighty offended by the indie kids article and now no indie kid will talk to me. Which is a tragedy because, you see, deep down…

I LOVE INDIE KIDS

And here’s why.

1) Their drug of choice. This is very important. Other ’scenes’ are driven by speed, pot, acid, smack, coke, et bloody cetera, but no scene since the very wonderful pub rock has embraced BOOZE with quite the alacrity of indie kids. Frankly you cannot go wrong when you have a plastic glass of cheap lager in your hand.

2) Some indie records are really good. If life has kicked you in the teeth once again and you are feeling sorry for yourself, particularly in a, y’know, romantic kind of way….well, then that 2-CD Kaiji Haino didgeridoo meditation is not going to cut it. And nor is the Sugababes CD, much as it pains me to admit it. In such a situation, YOU NEED INDIE.

3) They’re so cute when they’re angry.

In my town, almost all of the Indie and Hardcore kids dont drink or do drugs, we’re clean.

I am comfortale with myself. I strongly dislike mainstream music. I love my crazy hair and my style. I love art and taking pictures.

For those of you who dont like us Indie and Hardcore posers you obviously have not hung out or even talked to an Indie or Hardcore kid. Or even a hipster as we also call them here.

Dudes et Dudettes, wtf are you guys/gals making trouble over??? :S!!
look, it’s not about drinkin’, smokin’ or poppin’ pils or other shit like that, it’s just being indie and stuff. who ever said being indie is being a criminal??? :S!!! I don’t think that bands like ‘The Killers’ or ‘Kasabian’ do such things… and there is no wacko code where you have to live by to be indie :S! I mean, not a real book or somethin’… ok, you must listen to indie B)!!!! but that’s it ^^. stop this foolish thing and get a life if you think I’m wrong ^^ >

  11. Scanned... on 15 June 2007

xP here in Belguim , yeah Belguim B), you don’t even notice indie ppl :S!! I mean everyone is (trying to be) EMO, omfg, more then half of them is poser, they wear like a vest from H&M, tight pants and vans and they think they’re emo!! :S!! my girlfrien is emo and I can assure you she’s not a poser, but that doesn’t matter :P… but mu point is, much ppl here THINK they’re indie, but if there is another rage, they turn into that rage…! I’m not that kind of person, I’m just me, I don’t really know if I wear clothes to be indie or somethin’… but I do say I’m indie, maybe not on the outside, but surely in the inside ^^ adios….
PS: I hear that VINTAGE is like indie style… is that true? :S!

Whoever said Kaiser Cheifs are indie, they’re not. Thanks; I actually think this whole thing is stupid in itself, the whole lot of you should go read some William Golding, but yeah…the Kaiser Cheifs aren’t indie. But man, they’re playing at the IOW Festival next year! I actually quite like them :) and that’s why I think this is pathetic because kids these days are just whining on about some band they hope no-ones heard of on Myspace and then going to their room to listen to Rhianna…just go ahead and TELL everyone what bands you REALLY like/dislike/severly hate. I love Mika.
    “OMGZZZz thts soo uncool!!!11″ – yeah. I know :)

  14. independent indie on 26 December 2007

i am indie and i don’t care what all the chavz think about me there all dickheads who think the sun shines out of 50cent (or m&m’s) big fat hairy ARSE!!!!!!!!

  15. Ooleh! on 13 January 2008

Forget what fucking catergory your in already!

Right now i am stealing some of my uncles bud

If you really care what people think of your image/scene your in, then your sad,

Wear what you want when you want,

Just get some fucking taste in music,

Mika and the rest of the pop filled world of shite all need to be shot. They don’t make music they make noise.

The Chemical Brothers, Bob Marley, 2tone ska, Trojan records, Drum and Bass(NOT mainstream sellouts Pendu-fucking-lum), Skream! and Grime/Eskimo now that is music.

  16. Al Ewing on 14 January 2008

I don’t know how you can say Grime/Eskimo is the real music when you should be listening to Inuit/Psychobilly, Twatcore and French Nu-Bassoon (and NOT the mainstream French Nu-Bassoon sellouts like Froghorn or Monsieur Parp!). Do yourself a favour and check out The Aromatic Three, Greek Hiatus and Shaggamuffin if you want to know what the REAL people are into.

  17. Ooleh! on 14 January 2008

Why should i listen to what you tell me to,

all i did is open people’s eyes to music, what your suggesting to me i tried to find what you suggested to me couldn’t even find it, so unless you send me some somehow i don’t know how i can listen to your ‘Twatcore’…

and just who are the ‘REAL’ people?

  18. jona on 14 January 2008

The Real People were a god-awful scouse band, apparently ‘one of the very first bands to play what is today known as “Britpop”, and have been quoted by Oasis as being one of their major influences’.

  19. lucy on 30 January 2008

All of you, stop stereotyping yourselves.
You’re all Indie, because Emo went out in 2006; I blame Skins. It’s turned everyone into Indie Snobs and to be frank, it does my head in.

  20. Annie on 23 February 2008

First of all, it is really pretentious to call yourself an indie kid. I mean, the irony of indie kids is that to be indie, you cannot call yourself indie, or think you are indie in the slightest (so by definition no one is). And to think that you actually belong to this elitist group of hipsters (I mean that in the best possible way) is a very arrogant claim. And no matter what after-school special taught you otherwise, cliques and stereotypes do exist. If they don’t exist, where would high school archetypes have come from? They derive from actual groups of actual people with the similar mannerisms that in this case, are just inherently cool and listen to obscure music. I would like to comment on this article’s “kicked in the teeth” romantic comment. I do not really feel that indie music is all about romance and feelings. That’s what separates indies from scenesters and scenesters from emos. Let’s be real here people, it’s easy to get your subcultures confused, but if sterotypes don’t exist, why waste your time bashing someone’s post?

  21. Adrienne on 31 March 2008

well, i have to say to label oneself anything is pretty retarded… that includes indie. I myself do listen to music that is “indie” but i also listen to other stuff. If you feel you need to follow a certain dress code or life style because you want to label yourself something then you need to grow up. I buy and listen to what i like (whether that be “indie” or not) and i don’t buy or listen to what i don’t like.

    XD

This whole argument is pretty… very stupid.
    Really, who cares??
I am constantly being called indie for the music i listen to, however i disagree that i am indie which, apparantly just makes me even more indie :D
My point is, you are whatever you whant to be and whatever you feel you are. if i wanted to call myself gangstaa or chav i could!
so what if people thought i was strange?? im not a sheep, i wouldn’t care so why should you??
    I hate gangstaa’s and chavs though. :(
so that would never happen…lolz i prefer to just be ME! a complete indie-vidual! :P

okay can everyone settle. i mean seriously. this started out with someone liking indie kids. and escalated into freaking everyone flipping out on each others interpretations of “indie style.” who really cares. everyone has their opinion on what indie means, is, or should be. the truth is we’ll never know what it means or is. because apparently you can label indie-ness. so we’ll leave it at that. DAYUM.

  28. your mother on 30 July 2008

  30. lalabebe on 8 November 2008

You cant call your self indie or that defeats the point of being indie!
To be indie you do what you like and you dont follow the crowed indie means independent. Inide kids lissten to independent music and wear clothes from independent shops.
If your calling your self inide your one of the many people who clearly arnt!

  31. Sean on 17 January 2009

By including yourself in the fashion genre ‘indie’, you are completely contradicting the word independent, rather, further supporting brand names and record labels. You kids will do anything to be cool. Even if it means dressing like a loser and listening to horrible music. There’s nothing arty or poetic about being ‘indie’. Poe and Warhol were, respectfully, poetic and arty. The Fratellis and Death Cab for Cutie, I’m sorry to say, are not. Besides, there will always be next year’s fad and ‘indie’ will be no more.

  33. Emily on 12 May 2009

So, I’m just going to point out that everyone seems to have their own definition of this scene.. (indie kids do drugs, they dont do drugs; we ALL like to drink, we’re all straight-edge. )I’m a tad confused and it seems everyone else is, too. People who may lable themselves “indie” kids might all have a different view of what an indie kid is and to say that they are all mean and bitchy and blahblahblah is like saying all democrats want to legalize marijuana or like saying all christians hate gays. You’re all arguing over something oddly pointless, but I suppose laughing at you all has made my day a better one.
    Thanks

  34. Stacey :) on 29 May 2009

Okay, so I do really like indie music, I love vintage fashion and perhaps 50% of my wardrobe comes straight from the St.Vinnie bin. So to some extent I suppose that makes me indie-ish. But right now, I would honestly hate anyone to even consider me a mild part indie. The way you all talk to each other is foul, seriously. My impression of ‘indie kids’ was that they are cheerful, genuine and witty like their music. But from what you guys display through your comments all i see are ignorant human beings, who lack in any form of respect, tolerance or acceptance for others. So, what if emo’s ’stole’ converse… It’s a shoe move on. Not to mention the fact that you are all contradicting the ‘Independent’ thing. You all seem to be same. To me being ‘independent’ is not relying on other peoples opinions and judgements, but rather basing your likes and dislikes on your own and simply sharing that with others and being accepting of the differences. And maybe, next time some one ask’s you what your are, take the simply and honest answer and just say…”Me.”
And try to be nice, guys. You never know you may like it.
:) Have a good day all.

  35. Stacey :) on 29 May 2009

also, just to clear up. This comment wasn’t directed to everyone who had commented on this blog, just a few :):):)

  36. sabrina on 9 June 2009

everyone sees indie as different things.
    but focused on main things:
    clothing.
    hair.
    music.
    NOT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL.

  37. mayor mize on 22 August 2009

Do remember to be regular about your workouts though. As you workout regularly, your fitness level will generally improve, but skipping sessions here and there will mean that this improvement will come a lot slower than it otherwise would.

  38. Arthur on 2 October 2009

WE? Indie kids are so annoying.
The whole concept of being indie,
is being an individual. Got it?

Besides, you guys listen to the same
    music, digest the same sub-culture.
    Have the same ‘non-offending witty
    remarks’. Yous guys are robots.
We are all affected by media whether
    you enjoy it or not.

Sure I listen to indie music, but I
don’t need anyone else to know that.
Stick that in your Cake album.
    Good day, chums.

  39. youngest indie kid in the world :) xx on 23 October 2009

We don’t just like indie music, you know. I listen to metal (not too heavy. Nothing heavier than Stone Sour), and alternate. But it doesn’t really matter than indie kids won’t talk to you, because there are hardly any of us left because music is being taken over by wannabe rocks bands like Paramore and Fall out Boy or shitty pop like Rhianna and Little Boots etc…
Btw I’m eleven, just entering all this High School shit.

  40. ACM on 7 November 2009

Pffft. Why not delete the article then? This Tom Ewing is a condescending prick without a social life worth having, being a ‘pop critic’ and all. Most likely because it was his choice to burp out opinions on music to everyone who doesn’t care.

What? You just said that you love indie kids… but you didn’t refer to indie kids at all in this peice-of-shit article? After being so prejudice and stereotypical? And still not apologizing to all the people you’ve offended? And making even more assumptions that indie kids are piss heads who buy CHEAP alcohol and only the very few, cherry picked songs that YOU like are good? You’re an arse hole. That’s what Tom Ewing is.

I hate it when people like you ridicule the PEOPLE into a specific genre of music just because you do not listen to it. I guess everyone should call you a fag because you like Pop music, fag. It’s what you’d do if you enjoyed nothing but indie, wouldn’t it?

You’re life is nothing. You’re life is pathetic. I’ll enjoy knowing you’ve read this with no means to contact me back, my hands will be over my ears. Maybe you can write another article somewhere criticising people who hate you online, since you are, in fact, a fucking dick. Soak it up, I wonder what kind of living pop critics can produce. I’m assuming not much. Quit your job and do something that requires dignity, then maybe i’d take this all back.

  41. ACM on 7 November 2009

Wow, that was one hell of a rage.

I’m actually about 20% less angry than what that depicts ^ but still, you’ve no right to criticise people who are otherwise different to you. You need to get over your pride and apologize, not try and turn things around.

  42. ACM on 7 November 2009

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

This was written is 2001?!! I was fucking 9!

    You know what… I. APOLOGIZE.

I take everything back. Everything, wowzer, what the heeell didn’t even know indie even existed back in those days.
