The Devil has all the best tunes, as the saying goes – though he certainly did not use one for Sympathy For The Devil. I’m not so sure though, because recently I have been stuck on Dum Maro Dum by Asha Bhosle – which is from the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna and is unsurprisingly a Hare Krishna song. Now I’m on record as rather liking My Sweet Lord too, and I even have a soft spot for the finger cymbal clicking Hare Krishna Oxford Street song, so maybe Hare Krishna has all the best songs. The Bhosle number is a great organ fuelled stomp with a killer bassline. This is the kind of song which dispells Bollywood as a discrete genre by itself – this song leans as much on the Stones and The Doors as the big cinematic chorus numbers. What holds it all together is Asha’s beautifully supple voice, she almost growls over the more usual high pitched chorus warbling. Maybe we should have sympathy for the Devil, since he’s had the best tunes nicked off of him.
