So lately I’ve been listening to a bit of Slabco stuff, and really enjoying it, mostly for the more-than-pleasant sensation of hearing breakbeat music which isn’t as thoroughly up its own impeccably-trousered arse as our homegrown stuff. Slabco still believe in hooks, and cool film dialogue samples, and generally in making laidback and fun music. The tracks Land Of The Loops make, for example, aren’t trying to be nu-funk or abstrakt with their beatz, they just want to end up as add-to-taste sachets of comp tape atmosphere, and with that aim firmly in their sights they romp home. “I hope I’ve landed on my feet” says some posh boffin or other, and the breezy willingness-to-please of the music gives it an odd, poignant charge.
