Joe Meek was aften called a 'flawed genius' but this description applies to a great many creative people. He and Geoff Goddard were certainly only of their time. Pre Beatles teen ballads were their forte and even now the songs sound great. They should have been even more successful, of course, but the record buying public were, and still are, a fickle bunch. To me, Geoff Goddard was as good as anyone at writing pop songs but sadly never received the acclaim that his talent deserved. Perhaps he retired from music too early, but we will never know. R.I.P.

skymen pre-dates bowie's 'Starman' by ten years and I agree about it being the space oddity to Glenda's 'hard to beleive it' ashes to ashes. joe was obviously on mad auto-pilot by this time. When Skymen was recorded all was happy in the Meek camp but by the time Hard to beleive it was recorded it had all gone wrong for Joe. No other man had touched the British music scene so intense at that time and the British music Establishment are still in denial over this strange genius. Why don't they honour him in the Hall of Fame? Because he made them look foolish and they can't come to terms over the nature of his death but use him as a vague reference to look cool. As Joe would have said...'Rotten Pigs!'...and then go away and record a masterpiece.

RC on "Have I The Right?" - to paraphrase Marty/Ricky/Kim Wilde (and Errol Brown): "You'll never be so wrong"...that stomping rhythm is the beginning of time!

Then again the DC5 were established by the time this was a hit so I'm sure "Bits And Pieces" was lurking somewhere at the back of Meek's mind.

Uh - that "sub-Dave Clark Five 'stomping' rhythm" was created by Joe Meek, not the other way around.

No surprise that RC should like "Sky Men," since underneath the technology and "Martian Hop" citations the song is essentially constructed and performed in the manner of a 19th-century English folk ballad ("me and my darlin'" etc.).
