black max: it scanned a bit dark bcz the paper is so yellowed (burnt from within by its own acid!)

some of the other pages are more dogfighty — that’s what put it in mind

(tho they’re dogfights with GIANT BAT PEOPLE obviously)

(even aged 12 i wz a bit “ooer hmmm” abt the male nudeyness — another reason they stuck in my mind — i found a cache of six of em in a cupboard at dad’s house, all that remains of however many i once had)

I don’t remember it, no - I guess I had probably stopped reading those comics by then (I restarted at 16 or so when a friend brought me some Howard the Ducks to read - the creator & writer of those, Steve Gerber, died a couple of days ago, very sadly).

I remember that Black Max story. It might have been in THUNDER. or maybe it was in a Thunder summer special that I read it reprinted. And yeah, it was deadly.

martin — or even al! — do you guys remember a story in lion and under called BLACK MAX (it would be early 70s, so al will only know via the medium of HISTORY)

evil German air ace Maximilian Von Klorr has made an evil pact with giant bat people to battle the allies in WWI — there is a HIDEOUS DEMON DWARF called Dr Gratz or Dr Ratz, and it was honestly the most S&M homoerotic sustained thing i ever saw in kids’ comics

i think it needs to be a lollard-topic! i don’t know the artist though

Yes, taking a puppy with him seemed unlikely behaviour - but the bit where he does a loop and it falls out of the plane was quite funny.

It’s interesting watching him grow noticeably madder and madder as the phonebook progresses - the warning bells starting to chime when he brings a dog on a mission and ringing full-on when he spills some wine and shrieks that it is red like the blood of the brave dead pilots. And hallucinates a burning skeleton.
