In a joint bid for a jocose style, he and C.Hitchens seem to have smirked one another into this ghastly default mode of archness. I don’t know which one started it: my considered (= snarky yet bigoted) guess is Amis, since Hitchens still actually writes well when he can resist the urge to be lumberingly ornate.
