Watching the inevitable

In Lower City a prostitute ends up hanging out with these two dudes (they are dudes). They both take it in turns to have sex with her in a casual way. And this goes on until…

The odd thing about Lower City is the pounding sense of inevitability never overwhelms the rattling storytelling of the film. Everything outside the open love (sex) triangle is extraneous: perhaps fun to watch the odd scam being pulled, the odd boxing match and the odd bit of sex: but nothing is going to stop this rollercoaster reaching the final stop.

Except as I noted on a previous DYS post, people don’t follow things through to the strict tragic endings anymore. In this kind of triangle you expect a barrelful of death. And that just doesn’t happen. So there is hope, even in the poorest parts of Brazil.
