Sunday Evening Television - Midsummer Murders
MM is now so synonymous with Sunday evenings it’s difficult to say which came first. It’s set in a part of England bereft of the dangers of multi-culturalism, where odd people are rechristened ‘eccentrics’ and despite a growing body count, it doesn’t affect the locals’ manners. “Terrible news about the postman being hacked to death with an axe, wasn’t it?” “Quite awful. Are you coming to Midsummer Fete at the weekend?” “Of course, I was welly-throwing champion last year.”
Everyone is so formal. “Ah, Chief Inspector Barnaby, hope you’re well this fine morning?” “Good morning Rector, my daughter sends her regards.” His daughter is the strangely named Cully and aged somewhere between 25 and 45. Personally I prefer Barnaby’s wife; quite fit for an older woman.
Scott, or his predecessor, Troy, are there because every copper needs a sidekick. They don’t interfere too much, aside from a bit of flirting with Cully and often threaten to leave to ‘go to the city’. In the end, they smirk and think they’ll ’stick around’.
It generally takes the full two hours for Barnaby to work out who the killer is. “I think you’re the murderer, Rector.” The Rector, splashed with blood and holding an axe, is the last surviving citizen of Midsummer Fannydangle.
In the original series, it was easier to work out; the murderer was always the most famous ‘guest star’. Famous is a relative term of course, we’re talking Crossroads, Miss Marple, “that’s thingy” actors.
I tried watching an episode without drinking once. I wouldn’t recommend that, but with a bottle of wine, it winds-down Sunday nicely.

I really miss Midsummer Murders on Sunday, it has gotten so boring now on Bio. channel without the wonderful English mysteries. Hopefully they will awake to find no one is watching the crap they have on now and give us back our Piorot and Midsummer and even Frost. If they are shown on another channel please let us know. Jan

I LOVE MIDSUMER MURDERS, NERO WOLF, I TOUGHT MIDSUMER MURDERS WAS SUPPOSE TO CONTINUE. YOU SAID THE NEW SHOWS WOULD START IN NOVEMBER 2006. ONLY A COUPLE NEW SHOWS WERE SHOWN. THERE ARE OTHER SHOWS I MISS SHERLOCK HOLMES, PIROIT(SP) ALOT OF THE SHOWS ARE INTERESTING BUT I KNOW THERE MUST ALOT OF SENIORS THAT WATCH THESE SHOWS. THEY MAKE YOU REMEMBER THINGS THAT YOU HAVEN’T SEEN AWHILE. PLEASE BRING THESE SHOW BACK. WE MISS THEM!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully - Midsummer Murders, Piorot and past shows like Nero Wolf and Sherlock will be back. I have started recorded Piorot & Midsummer on Saturday afternoons so that I can watch them on Sunday nights. The mysteries were great and I miss them, putting it mildly.
A & E - PLEASE BRING THEM BACK - there is nothing but junk on Sunday nights now.

I just upgraded my cable channels & am paying an added fee to get the Bio Channel JUST to get Midsummer Murders, Perot, & Sherlock Holmes (mostly Midsummer Murders). Now I find they are gone. I’m really bummed about that. Please, please, please bring them back.

Whoever the genius is that cancelled Midsomer Murders on BIO needs a BIG promotion so that hopefully they will be removed from their current position and placed somewhere they can do no more harm.PLEASE bring back Midsomer murders.

i used to look forward to Sunday evening for a rerun of midsummer murders and Sunday night for the new show. now i dread the day because it reminds me that one of the most watchable shows on television is no longer on.

Glad to see I am not the only person upset at the schedule change on Bio. Hallmark channel has picked up a few of the mystery shows but I miss MM and Sherlock on Bio Sunday PMs. I no longer watch Bio at all.

I would just like to say that Midsummer Murders is they best program. I wish it was on again on a Sunday Night as it was something which I looked forward to watching. Please bring it back on ITV.

I too found this site by accident. Yes, please bring back Midsummer Murders. It is so much better than any thing else you can find on Sunday nights. It seems evident their will be an audience.

Are these comments being passed on to the programming chaps at BIO and A&E? They seem to be more concerned with the “otherworldly” and the “paranormal” than they are normal, run of the mill cozy murder mysteries. I like the idea of moving all of these shows to Hallmark, but honestly, some may be too graphic. How about Sleuth? Maybe they would show them in between “Miami Vice” reruns. As for the British mysteries, I sure do miss the intelligent writing and the outstanding acting by actors who have not been remade in their own image like their American counterparts.

Extremely strange, especially when you consider there was a very similar programme on nine days ago entitled MIDSOMER Murders.
Incidentally, that New Year one was terrific and a definite nod back to the days of The Avengers with lots of great, unsettling moments of surreal lite; the newly shot Donald Sinden trundling towards his eventual doom in a radio-controlled wheelchair, the Secretly Gay Husband And Possibly Not The Father being machine-gunned by his own garage door, Samantha Bond being chased Diana Rigg-style by an unmanned combine harvester - and the culprit (since Evil Richard Out Of Corrie would have been insultingly obvious) turns out to be meek and mild George Cole getting revenge for Sinden’s dad shooting his dad in WWI (”I looked after Mr Churchill’s television, you know”). Great stuff.
