A Vagrant, and A Silent Voice—are written by women. Squirrel Girl, Saga, Giant Days, Batgirl, Basketball Stars, and Supreme Blue Rose are the five more that I believe are drawn by women. Plus, 8House often has female authors and artists on its creative teams, and a woman co-edits the anthology Island, which features cartoons drawn by women.

Also: poor old Grant Morrison. He hasn’t released a good comic in ages and that makes me sad.

Also also: Read Nimona, it’s TERRIFIC.

None of those bottom eight that didn’t qualify would raise many eyebrows* in the top ten, and many of them have indeed made the top ten for other sites.

I had a couple of things above it on my entry, but Squirrel Girl is indeed the best superhero book going. I’m amazed at how good a grasp of print comics Ryan North has turned out to have; you’d think that by its nature Dinosaur Comics wouldn’t be great for learning how to script for an artist or pace for the page turn, but apparently you’d be wrong, because he’s been great at this since his very first issue of Adventure Time. Erica Henderson is also great, of course, but it’s not surprising. She can cram so much stuff into a panel and so many panels onto a page, and still keep everything so clear and legible you don’t even notice Squirrel Girl is averaging seven panels a page instead of five.

I’m sad nobody else voted for Dungeon Fun, but I’m sure whoever voted for Nimona is sad as well, because of me. I’ll have to get around to reading that this year. I’ve never heard of any of the second-place single-votes; another thing to look into.

Thanks for running the poll, Tom.

(*Okay, possibly SIEGE would, but it was good. And very interesting to read as commentary on the experience of working at Marvel during crossover season.)

A Vagrant, A Silent Voice). I think 5 more are drawn by women (Squirrel Girl, Saga, Giant Days, Batgirl, Supreme Blue Rose). Plus 8House has fluid creative teams which include women writers and artists, and Island is an anthology prominently featuring women cartoonists and co-edited by a woman. So you can get it to a bit over 1 in 5 titles with female creators placing. It’s worth mentioning since our entire top 10 has female lead or co-lead characters – our collective tastes are firmly in line with mainstream comics’ shift to diversity in cast, but sadly also firmly in line with women creators not getting the prominence they deserve alongside that.

My own ballot was barely better than the average, I suspect, and that’s only because I spent so much of the year reading manga – so a personal resolution for 2K16 is to read more comics by women.
