Standing There. It’s not hypocrisy compared to my last post – Bastille’s mistake was being too respectful.

The connoisseur’s choice, needless to say, is Martika.. like Mercedes from GTA Vice City in real life. A good friend of mine’s started dressing exactly like her in 1989, and in the studio, the Cribs have been obsessively listening to **THE PURE SOUND OF DRY ICE BUNNIED BY THE POOR MAN’S VANILLA ICE**.. er, never mind.

What tips it for Tiff is the passion that her voice reaches even when the material is piffle and blah. Whereas when Debbie’s material goes blah, that’s where the track goes as well.

I haven’t listened enough to evaluate their later careers though neither has thrown in the towel and Wikipedia lists about the same number of albums for each. Live performances on YouTube from Tiffany’s 2011 Rose Tattoo reveal her as a strong, tough-voiced country singer. But I’m not getting nearly the zing I got from her so-long-ago wail on stuff like “Danny.” Dipping into Deborah Gibson’s ongoing catalog has always brought me the blahs, but those are only rare random dips. What puzzled me early was how she’d managed to start great at 17 as a songwriter and then quickly get mediocre. But I haven’t heard enough to know if that’s the actual story.

Tiffany: a few REALLY good singles (the #1, “Could Have Been” – my first slow dance With A Girl, don’t you know; the severely underrated “Feelings Of Forever”, and especially, so especially, “All This Time”) , a few ATROCIOUS ones (that disastrous Beatles cover, “Radio Romance”).

Debbie: fewer big highs, and essentially zero really big highs, and (at least at this stage of career), only one atrocious single (“Staying Together”) – although arguably some of the ballads come close. More consistency, but barely a hint of excitement.

No sooner had I voted for Tiff, and the fairly crap Debbie song “Lost In Your Eyes” entered into my head and has remained there ever since. Clearly Gibsonesque retribution.
