the main problem with the threesome is actually legoland’s relentless one-note “smell the fart” acting i think (as pointed out by a friend on FB) — i’m quite happy for kili and !!!!tauriel!!!! to get down and do it right here right now

trick missed: lego instead pashing madly but unrequitedly on GLOÍN

I’d actually missed the opening minutes, the first time, so now note the implication is Thrain went to see Gandalf and gave him the map and key before err wandering off into the wilderness to die. (I still think the obvious twist would be to have baddies reveal with a flourish that Sauron had got him, but Jackson doesn’t always do what’s obvious to me.)

Galadriel scene is still muddled — I honestly can’t tell if she’s directly in Gandalf’s brain (if so, then why not always?) or if it’s a flashback to a conversation they had in Rivendell. The actual present-day impetus is Gandalf’s discovery of the black speech rune on the Mirkwood gate.

I found this time around that I was processing the secondary storylines as irritating distractions — I see why the Gandalf story has to be there, and I actually don’t mind Kili/Tauriel despite massive cheesiness; I find the leads rather winning, which is 75% of the battle when it comes to movie romance — but every time they cut away in the second half I wished they would go back to Bilbo/Smaug/Erebor. (Really like this dizzying Mandelbox vision of Erebor, which is one of the bits in Tolkien I always wanted to see. And the action sequence is really great, with Smaug as this sort of massive ADD tail-chasing lizard-cat… The first time around I was baffled until the very end as to what Thorin’s plan was! “Are they trying to forge *weapons*? This isn’t Vagrant Story surely, you don’t have days…”)

I mean, real talk, a lot of that must have been going on in Eregion in Celebrimbor’s day. HISTORICAL ERASURE.

My problem, which I think I’ve mentioned before, is that Jackson is perfectly able to convey a *sense* of Tolkien’s meticulously worked out distances/timelines, via Sweeping New Zealand Vistas(tm) if nothing else, but as soon as he goes off-book and starts inserting his own scenes, all that stops making sense. How do Radagast and Galadriel and Gandalf and the orcs and Team LegoTaur get places, seemingly instantaneously? *Where* are those places anyway? If I can’t keep track, I can’t retain a sense of why the scenes should have urgency.

According to !!!!Tauriel!!!!’s actress, there was no love triangle in the original script and she had signed up on condition that there be no love triangle, only for them to pull the old switcheroo in reshoots. :( So it must have originally been solely a Kili/Tauriel interspecies romance (doomed, I think; Thorin finds out and blows his top as part of generalized Arkenstone craziness, Kili and Tauriel run off and get themselves both killed at the Bo5A in grand Shakespearean fashion, Thorin regrets everything), and the Legolas side was added to give both him and Thranduil character development. But it does smell of hasty rewrite.

On the other hand THE FULL SNOW WHITE is amazing. (I suspect Bilbo plays that role in the fanfic; which is cheerfully polymorphic-perverse weird in the movie fandom, and profoundly canon/elves-obsessed in the book fandom — this is also the split you get with Doctor Who btw).

Unless they’re going to show up at the Siege of Dol Guldur? (Surely not)

Also why bring in the Nine at all when you’re going to arrive at DG and meet the S-man himself? They’re just a distraction at this point, nine or none.

Obviously the solution is for Galadriel to twinkle witchily out at the viewer at some point and say “if you want the ghost of a notion of following what we’re talking about, read THIS” and point to a massive cobwebbed tome called Ye Silmarillion, which is not only cobwebbed but still in its shrinkwrap ftb unopened.

The whole point of the scene is them realising the place they’ve been summoned to (by Galadriel?) is the Nazgul’s tombs, it’s why it climaxes with “there were NINE” i.e. the point of it is that the Nazgul are no longer IN their tombs thf. Sauron must be back.

That much I got, though for some reason I thought it was a prison not a tomb (it is not dead which does eternal lie!).

BUT why does Galadriel – if I’m remembering it right – summon them there? Does she know that the 9 have escaped and is simply being rather annoying in her show-not-tell? Does she have a hunch and sends Radagast and Gandalf to check it out? (Gandalf has worked out what the place is, Radagast hasn’t, as far as I can tell)

The White Council obviously has pretty awful internal communications issues, at any rate – this explains why Saruman was able to get away with it for ages I suppose.

Where actually was this tomb? (It is not canon!) I thought they were trying to break into Moria (tho had no idea why…)

But the problem is still the (under)writing of Kili, I think — especially in the key sequence. I’LL HAVE TO SEE IT AGAIN.

Tauriel death bingo ANTI: She’s not MENTIONED in LOTR – as Sabina points out, the R2D2-ing of Legolas makes what he doesn’t say onscreen in those films more important. For speculative viewers who watch the Hobbit first, how callous might he end up looking? (He IS a bit of a dick, though.)

I still think you’re right and she’s a goner though. However, I wouldn’t put money on it, but also wouldn’t be shocked if both she and Kili survive unbeknownst to all, to live out an offscreen happy-ending life and troll Christopher T something rotten.

This would have been better — James Nesbitt unrequition reprazent — but better still would have been what I scribbled in a note in the middle of the night last night ie THE FULL SNOW WHITE… by which i mean the whole crew go silly over her)
