I’ve just sampled the Southwold ‘M&S’ Winter IPA (6.7%) that was deferred above – it’s definitely from Suffolk, having that limestoney-peachy tang that Adnams and London Pride have. It’s not very hoppy at all, more like a bitter. Except it’s quite strong and GRBNNDGHURFFAFFHHGHEEEEEE.

I think my favourite part of this (as last year) is how I remember literally nothing that happened after 18:30pm. Except a vague memory of talking to Rick in the stairwell and him saying offhandedly, “You know, you’re quite drunk.”

What was the one that tasted like Slimline Tonic. It was a terrific day, and one which my tongue has only just recovered from (1000 bitterness units, even if it doesn’t taste it, can really shrivel the tongue).

I tried the Smuttynose IPA (“Finest Kind” as it’s also called on the label) the next day… or maybe the day after. Anyway, it was very nice.

I should point out that the Top 10 has been cobbled together rather arbitrarily (though those ones were all pretty damn good).

I didn’t actually try the Greene King iirc! But I did proclaim Mikkeler “the 1974 Netherlands of World Cup IPA” because it was so TOTAL in its quality yet somehow fundamentally unable to achieve victory.

NB: the (fresh) bottles of white shield tasted were very different to the c. 2 year old bottle i had in a south london pub the other week, which was lambic-y, not the cask version i had in the southwark tav about four months ago, which was just lovely.

there was no jesting about the 10/10…
