CAM break their hearts with a narrow victory over the Dutch. They can only glance enviously at their Korean neighbours as they board the plane home.

An impressive win for Japan here nonetheless.

I was, and still am, keen to see the Japanese progress as I’m fond of their odd take on pop and want to hear more of the manager’s selections. But this is their weakest performance to date. I’ve probably dismissed the Danes too lightly so far anyway. Looking back, they’ve put in three contrasting but effective performances and I’d be happy for them to progress too.

The electric bleeping of the Japanese crew combined with a singer who just got himself kicked in the balls (by the Danish??) doesn’t work for me…

Denmark mix up the styles creatively and it’s like Crowded House meeting Fedde Le Grand on the bus downtown (heard an echo of Pixie Lott there too). Their versatility won through against the frantic Japanese attack which only showed some calm and structure in the closing seconds when it was too late. It’s not the Laudrups and Schmeichel era, but Denmark will do for me this time.

JUST DON’T DO THAT EVER IS IT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND HOW MANY MORE TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT.

Not particularly keen on JPN either, Polysics are just too busy to too little purpose for me, but at least they don’t have a comedy twat being “hilarious” over the top.

I’m quite taken by the Danes as they slot the ball into the pocket (not to mention the goal) with precision and good humor.

I am backing them for the win over Japan and perhaps 2nd place in the group.

I’ve not found much to love about this Danish squad in this tournament and this is no exception.

Still, Japan are putting the effort in, it would be churlish to be too criticial of this kind of all out attacking play, even if there are some misplaced passes here and there and the odd own goal (that bit in the middle is supremely irritating) but it’s still enough to comfortably beat Denmark I’d imagine.

(i.e. Check out the video to the White Pony song, it improves it 100x)

Okay, so Laid Back were Denmark’s only decent band ever, but isn’t it kinda defeatist to name yourself after a line in a huge hit?

I fielded one of their players in the League Of Pop many moons ago. I liked that track better than this one, alas.

Denmark appear to rely on set pieces but their tactics are stale and easily read. Japan bring a bit more energy and invention to the game but there’s something mechanical about their play which makes it hard for me to get wildly excited by them. They may pinch a win here though.

I feel for both managers here – they’ve not really done anything wrong and may well find themselves failing to qualify as much because of the fixture machine as because of their own tactical decisions.

A common criticism of Euro-rap is that the skills aren’t really there, and Denmark’s frontman circumvents this by…er… just not bothering at all. With a bit more oomph in the backing his shoutiness would work pretty well, there’s a bit of a Teddybears STHLM feel to this – but it’s not really gelling for me.

Japan… well, Polysics do this kind of hyperspeed freak-out pop very well but it’s never a style that’s much appealed to me. Mind you I do really appreciate that the Japanese gaffer has worked hard to avoid the obvious J-Pop route and show us a different side of the country’s creativity all through this tournament so he’ll get my vote.

And don’t quite muster it in my opinion. My vote goes to Japan, but it all feels a little too late.
