A much more traditional formation from Paraguay here after the nails-on-a-blackboard tactics of their first game. I’m kinda disappointed actually, but it’s a solid display.

I don’t mind the Slovak vocalist at all – not the worst we’ve heard in the tournament by any means. The song is OK but the melody isn’t sticking yet; contrast with the Chile song from round 1, which is now stuck in my head. Mind you, everyone seemed to hate that, which doesn’t bode well for Slovakia.

Paraguay uses its Colombian formation for a lot of playfulness, though falls too often into a rock en español semi-Jamaican trudge; Slovakia puts a rough striker in a smooth setting and tries to work this for unexpected beauty. I’ll give the Slovaks a slight edge, the unexpected producing a goal or two.

Really strong melody to back up the almost casual ease with which they capture the mood of a summer evening drinking oddly strong local drinks in a strange bar.

SVK’s singer is well ropey – though far, it has to be said, from the worst singer we’ve encountered in this competition.

The Paraguayans feel like they’re playing their natural game and although it won’t go down as a classic, there’s some nice interplay from the guitarist who whips in the ball for the striker to slot it away from close range.

The Slovakian manager appears to be having some kind of Rafa Benitez style meltdown and the team selection could be his as well. This is a limited Eurovision style diva played hopelessly out of position in an unfamiliar formation which only exposes her limitations. It’s not a classic by any means, but I don’t have many doubts over which way this game is heading – Paraguay win.

I rather like both these songs, I have to say – tickets were available for a snip but it’s proved an entertaining spectacle. Very sudden ending on the Slovakia track, I think the Paraguay one sustains itself better.

Slovakia’s demeanour suggest they think the game is lost before it’s begun and their striker seems to be carrying an injury. Paraguay are more upbeat and are willing to try anything – including other sports – confusing both players and spectators. It’s not a compelling spectacle and it’s hard to imagine either team progressing much further.

I thought it’d be Argentina bringing the goods, but this is fairly sweet, and it even brings in a brief dembow and crunk chants to befuddle things futher. The idea of the summer-vibe track takes on a different connotation entirely when it’s not danes or belgians doing it, especially with subtle, well-constructed elements like this.

Slovakia… yeah, I tried the bare-voice-with-guitar tactic earlier this round. It didn’t work. And, well, it also mercilessly exposes the singer’s qualities, which in this case, uh…
