It Took Seconds: 6’05-5’31

FT/9 comments • 433 views

As you may or may not know I have been doing ANOTHER blog project, this time an MP3 blog over on tumblr: It Took Seconds.

The idea behind ITS is very simple – it’s a countdown: every day I post a song one second shorter than the day before. I started at the decadent stretch of 365 seconds and will gradually pare the tracks down to one second (the actual MP3 might be longer as I think there might be issues with files that short). There’s an informal one-track-per-artist rule too, and I usually have an ‘answer box’ where people can suggest their own favourites at each length.

I write stuff about the tracks too, but usually not very much. Anyway, here is an index of the first 35 entries: my blog design is intentionally very simple so I’ll be putting these indices here. You can still hear all the tracks at the links below.

See, I was wondering if there even were any 1 second long songs, but then I Googled it and it turns out you’re fine.

I keep meaning to ask, is there any way of seeing what other people have suggested on Tumblr? I keep answering but can’t see the other answers.

It turns out there ISN’T, which is really bad as I thought there would be and it removes the whole point from having that function – I might as well install bloody disqus there. There is in other Tumblr designs though so I think I’ll change the design over.

I only know 16 of these, of which Neneh Cherry is probably my favourite (with bookends Model 500 and Gerald just behind).

my mp3 of ‘Filthy’ is only 5:32 :/

i can’t believe you chose rasputin. that’s the song i learnt to dance to. i more or less haven’t danced since, as in pair dancing. and tumblr is shit, lex is so right. it’s autistic shit. where the hell are the comments, what happened to communication?

OK, I’ve now switched the theme to something similarly austere but which actually allows you to see who’s been recommending what! This works retroactively too thank god.

No comments on Tumblr is the default, I’ve thought about changing it for ITS but I dunno, I hate wrestling with Disqus, don’t know any better options, and I always feel bad about not replying to comments on my other tumblrs. I love the platform though – along with Twitter it’s absolutely reignited my interest in blogs, web content etc in the last year or so.
