And that’s even though the main character spends much of his time on the international circuit (a friend of mine working in shipping in the 1990s, and his description of weird processes of the global cartels matched up very well with the corn products meetings in this film). I thought the music got a bit much at times, but mostly I really enjoyed it (against lowish expectations).

2) Agree broadly on Mesrine: Public Enemy No 1, if only because Killer Instinct was my film of the year by some margin. Counted as one big thing, I still think it would be my favourite movie of 2009, but there’s definitely a loss of impetus in the second film. I didn’t see Che, but I guess it has a bit of the same challenge in working towards a known ending. Otherwise, I guess the point of PENo1, as the title suggests, is to deal more with the idea of the criminal as celebrity – and to show him as clearly more of a bastard. (Also, I wonder whether there’s more in part II, socio-politically, you have to be French to get).
