You're right.. Posada actually was a Yankee then but he barely played, and didn't play in the 1996 Series.

I clearly remember walking through the door of the Coffee Shop Bar on Union Square at the exact moment the Yankees won that Series. The TV was positioned right above the door. I opened the door and saw an entire room full of people, faces lit up at the exact moment that anticipation turns into sheer exultation, all looking at an invisible spot somewhere just above my head before bursting into sheer pandemonium. I've always thought that was 1997!

Obligatory baseball nerd corrections: the Yanks' first title in this run was in 1996, I'm not sure Posada was on that team at all, and Pettitte's name has four T's in it. Other than that, good stuff -- carry on!

As much as I loathe Curt Schilling with a white-hot hate, he did get off one immortal line about the Yankees' vaunted aura and mystique: "Aura? Mystique? Sounds like the names of a couple of strippers to me."

I've been finding it hard to choose an allegiance here: the Yankees are the Yankees, and thus both a megalith with ridiculous spending ability and now all the thousand buck seats and yet also a team with all the history in the world and for every pricely acquired Sabathia (with his admirable belly), a carefully nurtured kid like Cano. On the other hand, the Phillies can't really be underdogs because they're the defending champs, and they're not a very likable bunch, with Charlie Manuel's Gumpisms as near as they get to charm. Oh well, it looks like it'll end with me undecided.

Given Cole Hamels' statement that he can't wait for this season to end, I would be shocked if he got the ball for Game 7 (if there is a Game 7). And Cliff Lee can pitch through anything - in 2005 Spring Training he had the flu but still shut out the Royals for seven innings (I know, but still) before he came out of the game to vomit in the tunnel behind the clubhouse.

Pedro should beat Pettite on short rest, which tees up CC to take the final win. Though if I was Manuel, I would definitely play Cliff Lee in game 7 to set up a great battle to end a fantastic series.
