Martin Hannett's productions of malleable JD impersonators, where there was little to work with, are often his best. From this set The Names' Night Shift is maybe the best example - the song barely exists, but Hannett's weightless, dark design makes it quite beautiful. Oh, and Deaf (on the box set) may be awful but Crispy Ambulance's Live On A Hot August Night 12" (not live, by the way) is one of the ultimate Hannett prodns. I've never heard a guitar sound like it, such a clean, chiming sound without jangling - how'd he do that? Nice resurrection of Tunnel Vision in the Factory review.
