Vote Early Vote Often

Thanks to Alan for introducing a HOTT NEW FEATURE to Popular. You can now give a mark out of 10 to each individual track*, thus CROWDSOURCING the overall opinion of the Popular massive and making the whole thing more interactive etc etc.

I think this is fab! You have to be logged in to do it though. What better reason to register? (We won’t give your email to The Man, or do anything with it at all in fact.)

*Currently this is only enabled for the last n tracks, where n is a number that Alan knows and I don’t. But if it doesn’t screw up our back-end we’ll extend this to all of ‘em.

I have extended it to all popular posts. At the moment this even includes ‘admin’ popular posts (as you can see here!), but I’ll be changing it to only cover posts that have a score.

Tom, it was previously only going back to the point when we started putting the popular data in more systematically. That is between gilbert osullivan ‘get down’ and tony orlando and dawn ‘tie a yellow ribbon’. (The score at the end appears diiferently from that point.)

Any way to display average scores in descending order on a separate page? Too much to keep re-calculating automatically?

woah. someone (no names) has now voted on all 505 entries! over 100 entries have 2 votes, 40 have 3 votes, …, COE has the most of course with 14 votes.

yes i’d like to list the reader’s scores either on Tom’s ‘populist’ index, or on a separate but similar page. caching the data for a day wouldn’t be too harsh on our server. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I think I’ll just give 10s to the songs I think deserve it. At least for now. This computer is being rilly SLOW today so every page load takes about 10 minutes :(

Am I the only one who can’t see this feature? You said it was under Tom’s score but it looks the same as always to me (on a Mac w/Firefox)

That comment was posted when you weren’t logged in, so its probably that. I can see the username LondonLee has been registered ok though – so easy to log in (up there top right ^^)

Ah, see it now. Didn’t know I had to log in, the site always seems to know who I am without doing that.

Re 3: Once you’ve popped you can’t stop.

  9. admin on 20 April 2009

ok that makes 2 people who have voted on everything! and a lot of posts have 3 votes.

Re the results page – would be good if there was a ceiling (10 votes say) for averages to be displayed.

  11. admin on 20 April 2009

will do, if by ceiling you mean minimum! what other metrics do we need from this data? mode? a way to indicate the distribution – i might even be able to rustle up a tiny barchart to go with the average :-/

(coo, that took a long time to post this comment – i hope that’s not the general experience??)

  12. Tom on 20 April 2009

    Yes I mean FLOOR!

I think that was me who voted first – only meant to do a few recent ones but sort of got carried away – only took about an hour or so and that includes refreshing my memory of a few I didnt remember (mostly late 50s/pre-Beatles early 60s)on You Tube.

PS for ADMIN- when I did it I’d say it took about 3 seconds for each vote to be registered…
