That’s not to say my vote for Switzerland is purely based on a negative – I do thing Stefanie Heinzmann is better than a lot of that retro white girl stuff that’s around at the moment, her voice is distinct and interesting enough to make it stand out.

Germany – The Swiss entry would (and by all rights should) be getting a much tougher game. This is the better track, I love how the slow opener build up and the chorus loops over the flowering groove. But the problem is it’s just not German enough – there’s too much Junior Boys in there and I can’t separate the original source material in my mind. It’s fantastic source material but when there’s so much of Tensnake’s own stuff (not to mention the whole history of German pop) that’s just as good, if not better, it just feels like a copout. I’m undecided, leaning Switzerland.

The Germans get totally blandly blah and blank vocals from their Canadian frontboys, the merit of which is that the singing doesn’t distract the bass and synths from doing their beauty thing; in fact, I have occasional moments where translucent beauty shows through the singers’ blankness. That said, the Germans’ might have been in trouble had the Swiss not scored a few own goals.
