i've also sussed why we were getting so many downloads, but no concommitant hits :-(

during a recent event we allowed external sites to link to podcast files, and never removed that. i've just done so. we were getting hammered by some anonymous mp3 indexing thing that was using us as storage.

i am a massive bandwidth spoilsport.

The Turkish management highly approves of both sets of tactics here, however the Swiss striker may just have the edge over the Teutonic Techno and their 4-2-floor defences.

I have to agree with Matt about the German track - it's just too much Junior Boys for me to be able to consider it as Geramn, especially after the controversy over Germany's first group game. There is so much good German music out there to not need to pick stuff like this.

That's not to say my vote for Switzerland is purely based on a negative - I do thing Stefanie Heinzmann is better than a lot of that retro white girl stuff that's around at the moment, her voice is distinct and interesting enough to make it stand out.

Switzerland - I've heard FAR too much stuff that sounds like this lately, I suspect we all have, but this is a pretty good example of the genre. Good backing vocals and tubular bells clanging about in the background, and just the right amount of bounce to avoid getting mired in Adele/Duffy slush. I don't feel like it quite takes off though, and I've got a feeling this side was trotted out tactically, in anticipation of more German house, to hoover up the trad pop votes.

Germany - The Swiss entry would (and by all rights should) be getting a much tougher game. This is the better track, I love how the slow opener build up and the chorus loops over the flowering groove. But the problem is it's just not German enough - there's too much Junior Boys in there and I can't separate the original source material in my mind. It's fantastic source material but when there's so much of Tensnake's own stuff (not to mention the whole history of German pop) that's just as good, if not better, it just feels like a copout. I'm undecided, leaning Switzerland.

Hmmm. Let's see now. The Swiss too have been suckered into the stylized style that symbolizes style retro thing, which I'll always feel extremely distanced from. Nonetheless there've been moving results in said symbolically stylized style from the likes of Duffy, Winehouse, and Cilmi. And this isn't awful by any means, just not there, either as melody or performance.

The Germans get totally blandly blah and blank vocals from their Canadian frontboys, the merit of which is that the singing doesn't distract the bass and synths from doing their beauty thing; in fact, I have occasional moments where translucent beauty shows through the singers' blankness. That said, the Germans' might have been in trouble had the Swiss not scored a few own goals.

I'm only getting about two seconds of the German track.

(I mean, I know that Lex likes minimal, but not that minimal)
