Another Disco Fever owner here. Didn't buy it at the time, but a copy was left behind in the flat that we moved into in 1985, along with a copy of Don't Walk, Boogie.

I too have Disco Fever though the inclusion of "The Crunch" in particular is marred by the "some tracks have been edited" proviso. Happily it is now properly available on the CD reissue of the Crunch And Beyond album.

5 is super-generous. It's weird how ITV this sounds after Oh Boy (The Mood I'm In). This was also "inspired" by Abba - after all, the guy with the 'tache had been BOM's lead singer before the Swedish chart takeover led the girls to give it a go - but was a very decent 45 with a lyric about an abandoned mother and child, quietly desperate, with all the pathos that Angelo and his overripe saga singularly lack: "I would comb every home, every neighbourhood bar, I would ride every greyhound or railroad car". Mystery, too - why'd he walk out on such a warm and cosy family? "He haunts my mind and wracks my brain." Really, it's worthy of Abba.

BTW Angelo and four of the no.1s around it ended up on K-Tel's Disco Fever. Someone did a good licensing job there. Also includes "phantom" no.1 Magic Fly and the RAH Band's nasty (in the best way) synth-glam instrumental The Crunch - which sounds quite intensely NOW! Well, I've got Earl Brutus on my mind.

In the interests of objectivity I have forced myself to listen to every single number one several times, intently listening to the lyrics (something I didn't probably do that much before). Sometimes it's a pleasure, revealing elements I had never picked up before and sometimes....sometimes I wish I hadn't started. Angelo, as I now fully realise is a death disc. A very bad one. Anyone who ventured out to buy this and pay actual money for it (and there must have been quite a few of them) has serious issues.

I note from the above that they are still touring - one question comes to mind - why ?

When I saw BOM last year, they were supporting Bucks Fizz - not the still operational all-star Mike Nolan / Dame Cheryl of Baker / Shelley Preston version, but the Bobby Gee + his missus + two randoms version. Oh, what a night.

(One of my big music buddies from Uni sings backing vocals on DVD's #41 smash "Young Americans Talking", I'll have you know.)

You know, I never thought David Burger Van Day was a sad thing (funny, yes, but not sad): Good for him, not being too 'big' to do it. The scenario above re the BOM's reliving the victory is way sadder.

Although the classic:

Sonia: "You are a smug git"
DVD: "Well, i think we can all see that that is not true..."

will live with me frevr.

And I thought David Van Day had it bad with the Brighton burger van deal! Oh dearie, dearie me, that IS sad. Or at least it would be if they didn't also supplement their income by playing at Tory Party conferences. Live by the free market, die by the free market, eh?

No, it's sadder than that. They leave the stage, and then a tape announces them as "Ladies and gentleman, the winners of this year's Eurovision Song Contest are...!" (or words to that effect), as if it were 1976 all over again - at which they bound back on, changed into replicas of those self-same 1976 costumes. Replaying their one moment of continent-straddling victory, night after night, decade after decade, to ever-dwindling audiences on the Butlins circuit... so bleak, so bleak!

No doubt climaxing with a modern song to show that they're still "with it" - perhaps the Babelfished standard known as "They Create From Top" (to avert SB gimlet eye).

So, that makes two Number Ones out of the last three for the seemingly unstoppable Clem Cattini, even though his reign was fast approaching its end.

At the time, I loathed "Angelo" so deeply that my loathing became perversely enjoyable. The way that BOM couldn't even be bothered to finish the song properly particularly grated; for after the first verse and chorus, there are literally no more lyrical or musical ideas to be found, are there?

Re. #4: BOM's TOTP "whoopsy" moment came with their previous hit "Oh Boy (The Mood I'm In)". The record stuck, you see. This must have scarred BOM horribly, as the song doesn't feature in their live set any more - having been booted out in favour of a "Seventies Medley" which includes a particularly hellish segue from "Remember You're A Womble" into "My Ding-A-Ling".

#51 20 years ago Tim Henman's dad did the conveyancing on my previous flat. All was organsied by phone, so I never actually met him.

He's leading the opposition to the phoney, spurious eco town planned for our neck of the woods and devised by the evil government solely as a way to breach the green belt. So three cheers for him.

Unlikely Angelo. Obviously.

Re: 23 – Pat Nevin has grown duller with age, but he did write something pretty touching on the Grant_McLennan tribute site, so I guess his indie credentials are intact.
His place as the indiest footballer was taken by the briefly brilliant Gaizka Mendieta of Valencia and Spanish national team fame and Lazio/Barca/Boro infamy, a Velvets and Luna obsessive who wore his fringe like Roger McGuinn. (Interviewer: Do you share your musical tastes with your teammates? GM: Not really...)
I don't know if there's a current equivalent.

Waldo - I can't make up my mind if discussion of Mr Lime and his centre of post-war operations should be sub cunicule or not, since it will certainly be discussed (by me if nobody else) when the time comes.

18 October now committed to my diary. I feel a pre- or post- match pint or three coming on if I can think of a worthy watering hole withing reach of Holker Street, It's not that easy and I'd be inclined to keep well clear of the Bluebird Bar but I think the Ambrose may pass muster. I shall have to do some resewarch...

Erithian - Entirely agree. And alas, there's also the small matter of Novak Djokovich, another direct contemporary and already a Slam winner. IMHO, Andy's best chance of a Slam will undoubtedly be the US, where he won the junior event a few years ago.

Rosie - Yes, jokes against the Swiss! The most famous has to be Harry Lime's, to which I know you're familiar. That claim no longer applies, since the advent of Rog and in any case it is inaccurate, since the cuckoo clock was in fact developed in Germany and not Switzerland. So the evil Mr Lime was not only pushing dodgy asprin around war-torn Vienna, he was also talking shite, something that has never happened on Popular, of course.

Rosie, again - The footy fixture lists have arrived and Eastbourne Borough are due to visit Barrow on Saturday 18th October, which is not bad at all. I shall almost certainly be going to this. I know this sounds most improbable, but Eastbourne's a-buzzin'!!!

Waldo, you know that old joke that ends with the punchline that in hell the Swiss are the lovers? Well, guess who I dream of romping with in an Alpine meadow? ;)

Sure, Rafa is good-looking but he doesn't have that certain something for me...

Credit to Murray for his honesty and refusal to seek excuses yesterday. I did feel a bit uneasy at the bicep-flexing on Monday, considering he still looks like Mr Puniverse compared to Rafa. He'll have to face up to the fact that being close to his age Nadal will be in his way for his entire career, and unless he can make a very big step up, third-best is as high as he can aspire to. Which is not to be sneezed at - even Nadal graciously said he could easily be top five very soon.

Erithian and Jeff are quite right. Andy Murray did indeed exceed his seeding, although I need not point out that by doing so, he also fulfilled it. No matter. He's gone now and what a royal twatting he got. I didn't even expect that.

Rosie - You are unique amongst womankind (especially, if I may be permitted in saying, women of your vintage) in disregarding Snr Nadal. I guess you must just LUUURRRVE Roger, which I guess is fair enough. He's fabulous.

FTR, I was never a tub-thumper for Tim, personally. Nice boy and all that but I could never put up with his parents (the epitome of English stiff upper lip malarkey) sitting expressionless in their seats, considering cheering and punching the air like Murray's auld moose vulgar and unsporting. Tim's main problems were a girlie second serve, a tendency to lose concentration when in a winning position (aka: no killer instinct, which Murray has in spades), and, I'm afraid, no ultimate desire, which I put entirely down to his upper middle class background. As "The Punkmeister" has remarked (#37), these ingredients simply won't win you Wimbledon, even though Henman did emerge as a genuine world class act for a while, ill-starred to run into Sampras. The 2001 defeat to Goran is a moot point. He was surely unlucky to lose that semi but I have to keep reminding people that had he won that match, he would have faced Pat Rafter in the Final, Rafter having done for Rusedski in the 1997 US Final, and I for one think he would have been creamed. We'll never know.
