I’ve always had the fear that manga are lacking in thrill power, and that people read them only for their strangeness...

Haven't you heard? Nobody actually enjoys the stuff. They only pretend to, because it's fashionable.

Ahem. Sorry.

But the utter wrongheadedness of that can be proved empirically, as well as rebutted with snark. One need only consider the success of long, multi-volume manga (i.e., all of them). I would suggest that novelty alone might start you reading—but it won't keep you reading; the best manga is just balls-out, over-the-top, insanely eager to entertain, in a way that I haven't seen in Western comics (particularly Western superhero comics) in a long, long time.

Mmm, this sounds great. I've always had the fear that manga are lacking in thrill power, and that people read them only for their strangeness, but this suggests otherwise.

Tom, are you aware the first of two films came out of this in the UK a couple of weeks ago and garnered respectable, if baffled reviews. Its still on at the ICA, so I may need to do a comparable review NO SPOILERS!!!
