One thing I really liked was how dingy, how bare -- how FROWSY the photography of this movie makes the lives of the even richest Parisians look. Everything's in a cold, unflattering light rather than the sumptuous lustre we're used to seeing in costume dramas. What with this lighting, the scene you describe, and everyone's ultra-pale cadaverous mein at times I wondered if I were actually watching a zombie movie.
