DARE YOU MISS IT?
A Bite of Stars, a Slug of Time, and Thou will delve deep into the science fiction short stories of SF’s Golden and Silver Ages. The pulp and avant-garde writing of c.1935-65 has fallen out of public memory; hosts ELISHA SESSIONS and MARK SINKER and their astounding guests* will return to this forgotten motherlode, once bedrock of the entire field. Eli will read evocative extracts, then quiz Mark and guest on authors, styles, subtexts sexual and political, technique, value, impact and legacy, plus changing fashions and meanings in backdrop, tech and alien allure — and anything else that pops into their pulsating crystalline brain-lobes.
THERE WILL BE SPOILERS! hurrah so we will announce the story in advance, and you can read it if you like.
Episode one:
Extracts from John W. Campbell’s 1938 classic novella WHO GOES THERE?
Guest = “Starry” Sarah Clarke, Hegemon Ambassadrix of the Nebuline Dark-Matter Cluster J-Pop 9
Update:
Sluggards are go! You can hear Episode 1 now, or keep up to date with all the episodes on the Slug of Time page.

WOAH WOAH WOAH! The first line of the novella is “The place stank”!? Was that not also the first line of EASTENDERS?
katie on March 26th, 2008
Er OK the line was actually “Stinks in ‘ere”, as spoken by L Grantham AKA Dirty Den. Still! An auspicious beginning :)

Re Enders, I haven’t heard anyone remarking on the Max-Tanya plot where she buried him alive in a shallow grave in last Friday’s episode. That’s right, they buried a character on Good Friday and he was out of the grave by Monday. The greatest story(line) ever told…

ppl be pointing out the easterness of that plot alright. i was bothered by the running out of oxygen thing. it was a minimum of 4 hours in a coffin and he was quite woozy but def still alive. wikipedia will be of no help on this…
FT's Alan on March 27th, 2008
ha ha, the enders story has already been added to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premature_burial

The trick the producers missed is that they should have hired celebrity guest actors to play the roles of Tanya and Max for Friday and Monday only.
In honour of the late Anthony Minghella I nominate: Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes.

Surely you’d survive four or five hours in a coffin, yr body would slow down a lot though wouldn’t it? How long was D4v1d Bl41ne* buried alive for?
*Disclaimer, he may have been cheating.

Blaine had oxygen pumped in as well as an IV drip, cause he was down there for a week. I walked over to the West Side Highway and saw him, on a rainy afternoon. There was six feet of water above the transparent lid of his coffin, and the rain made little plippy circles in it, so it was hard to see him down there with his blanket. But he waved at me, I’m sure he did.
