I do think Pitchfork is on occasional source of astute commentary (usually from their freelance writers, rather than the regular staff), but I have to wade through miles of snark and self-effacement to get there. I can't tell you how many times I've reached the end of a review and realized 1) I have no idea what this album sounds like 2) I have to look at the numerical rating to see if the reviewer liked the album or not. The first one that always comes to mind is their review of Xiu Xiu's "A Promise," which had me convinced they sounded like Interpol.
