(googling and reading various US food sites suggests that "continental breakfast" ie "breadstuffs and coffee" is considered european in origin, even tho actual real european breakfasts are all more specific and varied than this)

eg via wiki: "Twaróg, a Polish cheese, is the breakfast classic and comes in many forms. Twaróg can be eaten plain, with salt, sugar, or honey, or it can be mixed with sardines or chives into a cream cheese-like spread."

I think I have told the story - probably on here - of the hotel I went to on honeymoon where we were the only guests. We came down for breakfast on the first day of the stay to find a real actual salad of all the breakfasts - cold meat, croissant, bread, rye bread, cereal, yoghurt, porridge, egg, bacon, sausage, cake(!), local polish delicacies, all manner of juices. It was amazing! We ate quite a lot obviously - tried a few things, and left a few others because we were too full.

Then the next day we went down for breakfast to find that they had put out ONLY WHAT WE'D TRIED the day before but in larger quantities! Market research in action!
