The RT list seems to conflate cool into very different subgroups:

Cool as in written to be cool in their universe:
Hence the Fonz*, Cat and Dylan (maybe Sawyer).

Cool as in a synonym for a great admirable character:
DW, JB, GH

Cool as in unflappable:
Columbo, (Sawyer), Doctor Who a bit, Dermot a bit

Cool as in ladies want to have the secks with them:
Sawyer, Mr Darcy, Dermot O’Leary

*How cool really is a man who calls the mens lavvies his office?

The RT list’s fiction-centricity raises an interesting qn i.e. if cool involves a certain economy of effort, can fictional characters be cool when the entire narrative universe in which they exist is secretly loaded in favour of letting them do ‘cool things’? This is what always annoys me with ‘cool’ characters in comics – the construction of moments of setpiece coolness.

(I look to Pink S to put this in Buffy/Xander/Bez terms)
