Lex: yes, that sped the process up, but this practise was banned (or rather, made ineligible for the charts) and climbers did not return, so there's a longer-term trend too.

As I remember it the decline of "climbers" initially was because, for a while, singles in their first week of release were priced at £1.99, but £3.99 thereafter...

As has been written elsewhere, the main problem is the absolutely low number of sales required to chart. To me, the interesting thing to figure out - and I don't know how you'd do it - is WHO still actually buys singles. Given how easy it is to "find" music for free now, I have to believe that sales actually only reflect popularity among certain social group(s).

As a self-proclaimed "Rockist" (which is a name that makes no sense, really - shouldn't it be someone who has a prejudice against the riff?) the charts should be about singles. The odd reissue's alright, but it's about what's happening now. And the idea that the charts should be "Randomised" is, to say the least, bizarre.

I do, sort of, understand what they're getting at, though.

OK, I do not really think that, but I would find it interesting to see songs of today do battle with every song ever recorded. It would be interesting to watch random tunes leap to the top of the chart simply because they were in a film that was on last night.

I would love if the downloads chart was for songs, not for singles. It would be great to see real classic songs triumphing in the charts over the manufactured rubbish of today.
