    b-but is ahab a pirate captain? — the crew are def not “masterless men” as they sign ship’s articles on land in presence of the ships’ owners (=peleg and the other one)

    nevertheless ahab is MAD and considers himself not answerable to peleg and the other one, at least in matters moby: hence i think the answer (re PIRATE) is actually yes, but hmmm it needs some further explication

    (further evidence: the entire book, from title on down, is about teh HOTT GHEY SECHS)

    They all seem to be bonkers enough to be pirates anyway. Queequeg has just decided that he’s not going to die of the ill after all because he had “forgotten to do something ashore”, and has instantly recovered. After the crew had gone to the trouble of making him a coffin and everything.
