If you’re going to use the ‘young girl takes refuge in fantasy world from wicked stepfather’ trope, you want to make the stepfather really ghastly to the poor girl; instead he just kind of ignores her.

Stylistically it worked well enough, but I prefer my films to be a bit messier: so like Tideland more for a similar stab at this kind of material.

One of the few times I’ve come out of the cinema thinking a film could have done with being half an hour longer; the fantasy world really was given short shrift, awesome design work aside*, and the trials were dispensed with far too easily.

*My favourite detail was the medieval-style pictures of scary eye-hand man killing peasants on the walls of his gaff.
