I think we can spoiler away, since its been on BBC3 and BBC2 and more importantly, I’ve seen it and now have opinions on the gap toothed, Who companion rejects and their sexy alieum crimes.
If we have proper Torchwatch article, we need to note PC Fringeface’s(copyright Starry) amazing vanishing hair. One minute it is the size of Swansea, the next it fits under her copper-cap. It enthralled me in the first episode.
i. i love the way cardiff is being used
ii. RTD is v.v.funny about non-marital sex
iii. SEX and ALIANGS — ok this could become dreadful, but so far i enjoyed it — ep.2 was quite silly but not a bad way
iv. rtd is grebt at misdirection
v. it is already better than the whole of the x-files evah (but then os is being struck over the head with a metal bar)
vi. i like how capt jack behaves like ANGEL wrt large buildings ie stands on the top edge of them to relax
vii. i want to marry gwen
viii. the two woodies who are not jack or gwen are a bit feeble
ix. the music is too loud really
x. haha the “asteroid” was an hommage to star trek’s SFX
there were at least two points when i thought HE READS ILX THREADS — one was the csi jokes obv, the other was gwen’s checklist of things to talk to the possessed girl about (except i can’t remember what the capper WAS here)
up to the climax the first ep distinctly reminded me of my lovely DOOMWATCH of long long ago!!
“No! Toby! Don’t defuse the atom bomb!” *ep ends w.loud explosion offscreen: toby has defused the atom bit but not the bomb bit :( He then went on to play JEEBUS and is currently in Holby City doin an ACCENT.
But there surely was a TV tec series w.an immortal detective — what am i thinkin of? (CSI: GALILEE no)
‘ep.2 was quite silly but not a bad way”
agreed! i don’t know how people can complain about ’stolen’ or ’seen it before’ ideas in this way for this sort of show really.
‘v. it is already better than the whole of the x-files evah’
aka humour is better than bleakness?
‘ix. the music is too loud really’
OTM - my guess is that it was ‘badly Mastered’ due to them running too close to deadline
no it is ANGEL not the MATRIX — subtle distinction between GUARDEDLY AWESOME and MOST RUB THING IN ENTIRE COMPLETE HISTORY OF RUB
but actually what i meant more was the decision to make a very specific newly architected regional city-centre a stageset — with the exception of poxy oxford, non-london urbs uk is rarely starred this way
re x-files: swift self-awareness is better than ALWAYS BEING INTENSELY BORING wd be my capsule review! Post-MIB i think it is hard anyway to “not notice” the fact that you have cast Earth as a pan-galactic flight hub
ep2 was kind of a star trekky idea i spose, but w. RTD’s QAF skeez just done in a very funny way
and plus set in BINGE BRITAIN! this really is my favourite decision and i hope they don’t throw it away too soon
oi, Ianto-make-the-tea is not feeble! Ianto-make-the-tea is creepily professional!
I love love loved the way you’d get those grandiose swooping cityscape shots that in Angel would be LA or in CSI would be Las Vegas, but here they are CARDIFF. Also i think it is designed to appeal to that little bit in your heart that says ‘aw, i love the Welsh’ every time you hear the accent.
haha when the oldster woodies all asked her “so what hgave you found out about capt jack” and gwen sed “but you’ve all known him for ages” and they sed “yes but you’re a POLICE!”
also (i’m sorry i know i am RTD’s BITCH) i liked the bit where gwen asked if they had bfs&gfs
except “Day one” wasn’t scripted by RTD - tho i get yr meaning, it is an RTD show. and i too liked that bit.
on the whole it’s OK - not gripped by it. too predictable so far. harsh to judge on “the set up episode” and one more. i’ll give it more. i’m more +ve about this than emorobin.
emma is finding CptJack a bit insufferable compared to his DrW incarnation.
problem with Captain Jack is perhaps that he’s now in Leader role as opposed to maverick sidekick in Who. he doesn’t really cut a good moralistic authority figure imo.
true — and not to defend CJ too much, tho he’s better than david BOREanaZZZZ — but wasn’t the fun of these two eps gwen’s dawning realisation that ACTUALLY NO RULES APPLY? (and that her job will be to come up with some and enforce them!)
it is so the opposite of the usual conspiracy-theory routine re sekrit orgs (CONSPIRACY STUPID MORE LIKE)
i still carry a torch of timid hope for tinyhood but it is guttering fast
Gwen’s role reminds me of one in a part of one of my old favourite SF novels, Theodore Sturgeon’s More Than Human, where a human is drafted by a somewhat symbiotic group of mutants, to act as their ethical guide and conscience.
I thought it was a good setup, then the second was disturbingly like episode 86754636 in a long-running SF series, so I hope we don’t get loads like that. I’ll keep watching.
Urggh there was way too many overhead swooping shots of Cardiff, so that in the one occasion it could have been really effective the impact was undermined.
I haven’t seen any Who that had CJ in it (”I didn’t get where I am today by appearing in BBC3 spinoffs”) so he is a new character to me & tbh I’m quite disappointed. Gwen is cool though, although a bit heavy on the humanism “ooooh you can’t abandon her she’s just a girl” etc.
Concur abt music being rub & overbearing. And that the sechs episode was direct lift off that Outer Limits episode.

I am absoultely certain that there will be an alieum alcopop episode at least. (Binge Drink Britain - call it by its name).
My favourite bit was the way Capn Jack avoid question abou tthe HOLE IN THE STREET, by channelling Ecclescake Doctor.
Oh no, the mystery of Torchwood 4??? (Belfast one assumes). Above the police, outside the United Nations, er - “all in Britain”.

I quite liked the Cardiff as awesome place, but the idea that the secret hideout is slap under a landmark niggles a bit.
