By: Elisha Sessions https://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2006/10/plots-now-thicker-than-ever/comment-page-1#comment-46966 Sat, 28 Oct 2006 18:21:03 +0000 https://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2006/10/plots-now-thicker-than-ever/#comment-46966 this jives with the new breed of tv show that seems designed to be watched on DVD – especially hbo’s “the wire” – where tiny details planted in one episode become crucial later on. the casual, or individual, viewer misses many of these connections. in some cases this is fine – it simply adds to the feeling of a “large” world the show inhabits; much of real life is oblique and unexplained, so why shouldn’t fiction be, too? but it’s take-uppable by networks of people – friends of various digital and non-digital stripes, and makes conversation about it rewarding. this kind of show also, of course, stimulates the desire to pore over previous episodes, to rent or buy the previous seasons – to attach oneself to the “long tail” and see where it goes.

I don’t really think it’s a web-based thing, or at least not specifically the last five years. Twin Peaks, Sandman, Harry Potter all seem designed to be pored-over. Strangely I don’t think this of Buffy.

Of course stuff doesn’t have to be designed for this level of attention to attract it – my earliest group-internet experience was part of a mailing list that boiled every episode of Friends down to shippy gruel!
