A Google image search of "tanuki" reveals a vast number of interesting pictures, most of which are unexplained (and generally inexplicable) unless you read Japanese.

A magic fox is called a kitsune, they seem to follow different rules from tanuki. They're also different ways of serving udon in soup - kitsune udon has fried tofu, tanuki udon has little balls of tempura batter which clearly must be a ref to tanuki nads, oh man I'm never eating that again.

Yes, I was very disappointed when that was not translated as "Piss-pot, piss-pot on the floor - whose the fairest of the all"

i had a book of tales of world folklore when small which had a japanese story featuring a MAGIC FOX which i think was also a tanuki -- it is at doctrah becky's house now so i will one day check (if i remember) (which i won't)

you forgot the bit where the SNOW WHITE-ESQUE MIRROR much consulted by the hero's ugly dad = a giant steaming pot of p1Sss

The translators of Studio Ghibli's 'Pom Poko' also go to great lengths to avoid mention of Tanuki testicles - even when the creatures are using their scrotal sacs as parachutes and boat sails!
