Every now and then the Guardian’s real actual comments pages address a musical topic. Freed from the sensible confines of the arts section these are reliably bonkers provocative and are definitely the most entertaining musical coverage the paper provides. Here Dylan Evans gives it to Beethoven, essentially for being too emo. I think there’s a good point in here somewhere about the limits of self-expression as an artistic goal in music.
