I had a pretty good day there in 1990 too - I think we went on THE hottest day of what had been the hottest summer since 1976.
As my wont back then I was already pretty caned when we walked in the place and I think we then sort of collapsed in the bar just inside the gate but once out and about on the log flume, going on the "train" thing out to the animals we managed to have a pretty nice day. And I somehow managed to take some photos which I've still got and just ooze how hot it was that day(well over 90 degrees)ridiculously blue cloudless sky, parched earth etc and look more like they should have been taken in Greece or somewhere...We went straight from there to try to find this rave near Burnham (Slough) but this was 1990 and as was always going to be the case by then we didnt find it/it never happened and instead we ended up ruining a perfectly good summer's night by going to the pictures at midnight in High Wycombe to see 'Dark Angel' with Dolph Lundgren (not my choice!)which i saw all of about 5 minutes of before dozing off...happy days

I loved Thorpe Park but haven't been since 1990. The Phantom Phantasia or whatever it was called seemed incredible to my wee self.

It just seems like "it's the place that nobody ever talks about", Legoland and Chessington have their fans, but TPk does, um, not.

It's rebranded itself as the south's premier thrill-ride attraction (Chessington presumably being more a family-fun deal).

That doesn't actually answer your question though.

Chessington World of Adventures wasn't to open for a few years, still being Chessington Zoo back then, and I always hated that Alton Towers was too far away. I get the impression that Thorpe Park was a bit shite simply because they could get away with it.
I went there the year that Space Station Zero opened - went on that four times, and on the ghost ride twice, even though it was rubbish. Went on the Magic Mill only once, we got so bored that we pushed against the sides of the canal to make the gondola go along faster, resulting in a semi-terrifying moment when we crashed into the one in front.

Thorpe Park apparently only opened in 1979 so my guess about its origins was completely wrong!
