The backlash begins? Too Many DJs Snub 2 Many DJs: “I often have 2ManyDjs enforced on me by women on tour buses. It’s f*cking Jive Bunny that’s done in such a trendy type of way it suits Post Menstrual Stress.” Dave Clarke (via Pulp Issue 41 and Tranzfusion)

Viktor Lazlo — ‘Breathless’ (aka PopNose 12)

Having moved to Belgium to study and model, the French femme fatale Sonia Dronier was discovered by Francis Depryck, the producer who had made Plastic Bertrand. She re-invented herself as Viktor Lazlo stepping out of Casablanca. In many ways she resembles Sade: not only does she have the same non-threatening sexuality, she makes lounge/jazzy music seem a good thing. I remember seeing her present the Eurovision Song contest — courtesy of Sandra Kim winning the year before - and I was just enthralled. The 80s hit ‘Breathless’ - a brilliant song that should not only be remixed by Wiley (see comments) but begs for a horrendous muzak version - was written by Sonia Dronier and Philippe Allaert, who went on to form Vaya con Dios. The last thing that was heard of Viktor Lazlo on full CD format is the Sly & Robbie produced Verso, if you find it send me a copy! :-)

My boyfriend and I have been obsessing over Luomo.

My boyfriend and I have been obsessing over Luomo. A glorious mixture of deep house and microhouse that in a way reminds me of The Culture Club and, uh, Indian food. What I love best about music and food is when the different elements seem to blend and you, the eater/listener, can’t really pinpoint what the ingredients are. Luomo seems to achieve that: there’s a way Vladislav Delay manages to blend beats and vocals, he basically controls me. This is something I also experience when eating Indian food: all the spices just wirls around my palate. However when the Isabella Rossilini voice suddenly drops the mixture of coffee and feta cheese in between succulent Luomo beats, I can only say “Worst food combination EVAH!”

I am not much of a

I am not much of a breakfast person but my boyfriend urged me to take up this habit. So I relented. Happily. Breakfast this morning consisted of muesli, extra raisins, dried banana, dried apricots, dried apple rings - yes, yes, I love dried fruits - milk and a dash of maple syrup. Tomorrow might be a winter breakfast: dried figs ‘n’ dates soaked in apple juice for about six hours. Then, in the morning (duh!), heat it up with apple and banana chunks. I might spice it up with some ginger.

Snax part 3917: Curried Bean Toast

Snax part 3917: Curried Bean Toast

This is easier to make than the “curry in a hurry” recipe I posted yonks ago. You mix a can of baked beans in tomato sauce with a spoon raisins and a teaspoon of green curry. While you heat the beans, you toast two slices of bread spread with (olive) butter. Then you slap the bean mix between the slices and, PRESTO, you have dinnah!

Yesterday my book order arrived

Yesterday my book order arrived (along with a videogame for my soon to be husband). I’ve been trying to find a good indian recipe-book. (Yes, email me recommendations!) As I have only started cooking a year or two ago, I’m not yet experienced enough to make complex dishes. Hence why i started with simple japanese recipes, such as oyakudon and stews. You don’t really need a gazillion spices, just some dashi, mirin and miso. Anyway, I am now delusional/bold enough to try out difficult curries and pilaus. The problem isn’t only lack of experience, I don’t seem to have the right pots. Why does the rice always burn ‘n’ stick to the pots? The indian cookbook also has a ghee recipe. Uh no, not yet ready for THAT. Maybe next year!

A few months back we needed to make a chocolate catalogue for a business relative

A few months back we needed to make a chocolate catalogue for a business relative. Because we needed to photograph the pralines, we received samples which we could eat after the picture had been taken. Since then we’ve become chocoholics testing various brands. Most important of all, I re-discovered white chocolate. I know, I know, it’s not really chocolate - where the hell is the cocoa, I hear you screaming - but I can’t help it: WHITE CHOCOLATE ROOLZ. Especially white chocolate with rice crispies. While jumping from one site to the next, I discovered a recipe for white chocolate coffee!

Since curries are the flavah of da month (sigh…)

Since curries are the flavah of da month (sigh…), I wanted to pitch in with my favourite curry dishes. I think one of the first food preparations I served my boyfriend was a completely faux curry from some Hawaiian cook book. It’s basically throwing cooked chicken bits, cream and curry powder - otherwise it wouldn’t BE curry, now would it???? - in warmed up mushroom soup. Yes, yes, it sounds completely blergh, but it was soooo good. Certainly better than the Japanese rice + tofu salad we gobbled every noon. From then on I, or rather, we were curry afficionados. I’ve gradually moved up to the real thing (though in some dishes I still add raisins!). Inbetween I managed to go completely gaga over Japanese curry. It’s very basic: you just cook meat, potatoes and onion and after half an hour or so add the curry paste. Totemo oishii desu yo!

While all the other Pumpkin-heads are floating in alcohol, I discovered there’s such a thing as… PIMIENTO CHEESE (aka the pat’ of the South)! It still can’t beat spray cheese though.
