The Dun-A-Ri

Pumpkin PublogPost a comment • 322 views

The Dun-A-Ri – yes that is an Irish name and hence it has been given the epitaph of The Irish Bar. High praise indeed to be given the definite article in a city full of Irish pubs after all. However it is more an echo of The Spanish Bar (which really doesn’t have a name) – for it is an after hours boozer. Not only that but its one which happily lets groups of pissed revellers in after standard closing time. Happily is probably a bit of a misnomer. I daresay their very nice bouncers would see you away if you are lary, but that never happens.

Its biggish, has a pool table and it used to do late door karaoke on a Wednesday. But in essence its open til 2am most nights (only 12 on a Sunday -pah), and its right by my night bus stop which will do me. Anyone who thinks it is scary has never seen a horror movie. Bottom of the Caledonian Road – not to be mistaken for the Flying Scotsman.

BOREDS OF CANADA (Do You See)

Look out parents. All over the world there are grubby, unkempt men hiding in bushes near playing fields, schools and outside sweet shops. No, it is not Gary Glitter or any one of his paedo gang – this is something just as serious however. It is the Boards Of Canada and they are lying in wait to tape recorder your childrens conversations. Not even for some cheap sexual thrill though, no they want to chop it up, misrepresent and loop it over repetative beats and the sounds of whales farting. And then to add considerable insult to mental injury they will call the track something like Fractals For Breakfast.

These sick evil people believe that their so called music has a right to children. They are undermining and destroying the culture where you live. Rise up in arms and get them banned. Use you constitutional rights to destroy them. Consider yourselves warned.

Lunes Felices: “Diagnostico confirmado: Pete Baran es un nabazo.”. A run through various inadequate translation software doesn’t tell me what precisely Pete Baran is but it does tell me we have a dissatisfied and thoughtful reader here, annoyed first by the geopolitical naivety of my “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” piece (guilty as charged), second by Pete’s fillum choices, and third by my liking The Streets – a point I’d love Marcos to expand on back on the ILM forum, if he’s still reading.

The broader point is that dilettantism has the same potential payback it always has done – if I dabble in other people’s cultures for sonic thrills, people with rather more at stake in those cultures may well tell me to get fucked. The thing is – and I wish I’d responded more to Marcos on the ILM thread he links to – I want that to happen. If I’ve said something dumb I want it pointed out, so I can learn more about the stuff I’ve been getting wrong. I’m sure I’ll keep on tooling around and listening to stuff I shouldn’t be but maybe with slightly more informed ears.

Everybody’s favourite new rock band The Libertines do the interview thing with The Guardian. Surely Michael Bracewell designed them in a lab??
